With zero-emission zones expanding across Dutch cities and a nationwide deadline fast approaching in 2030, emission-free transport is no longer just a choice, it is the new industry standard. For the performing arts and event sectors, this means one thing: we need to anticipate, adapt, and switch now.

Here is your step-by-step checklist to hit the road fully charged.
Step 1: Map Out Your Tour
Before selecting a vehicle, it is essential to establish the exact scope of what you are transporting, how heavy it is, and the distances you will cover.
Weight & Space Optimization: Less weight means less energy consumption and a longer driving range. Consider using compact meatracks instead of bulky flightcases. For costumes, a lightweight garment bag often suffices instead of a heavy wardrobe flightcase. Furthermore, coordinate with venues—utilizing materials available on-site means you don't have to haul them yourself.
Venue Capabilities: Larger venues typically offer better facilities, such as dedicated power points or on-site chargers.
Driver & Planning: If you rent a vehicle with a chauffeur, the transport company handles the driving and charging schedule. If you drive yourself, ensure you assign a dedicated driver to build up experience with electric touring.
Distance Boundaries: * Under 150 km: Virtually every electric vehicle is suitable.
200–350 km: Charging along the way will likely be necessary during winter or when facing headwinds.
Above 350 km: A planned charging stop along the route is strictly required.
Step 2: Choose Your Vehicle
The market now offers reliable electric alternatives across various vehicle categories. While battery weight previously reduced the payload capacity of smaller vehicles, a special exemption now allows electric delivery vans up to 4,250 kg to be driven with a standard B-license under specific conditions.

Utilize Industry Tools: * Green Touring Sheet: An up-to-date registry maintained by an industry truck driver detailing which venues have charging infrastructure and where it is not yet permitted.
Apps: Use A Better Route Planner (for B-license vehicles), Chargemap (for general European charging stations), and eTrucker (specifically for e-truck stations).
Coordinate with Venues Early: Always announce your electric vehicle and charging requirements well in advance via your technical rider. Outline both the ideal scenario (using the venue's own charger) and your self-sufficient backup (using your own mobile charger via the venue's power connection).
Settle the Bill Smoothly: If a venue has a standard charging station, you can typically pay using regular charging cards (opt for low-margin providers like Tap or E-flux to avoid high roaming fees). If no charging station is present, propose settling the consumed kWh via a separate invoice, the regular ticket settlement (borderel), or a standard proposal rate of €0.35 ex. VAT per kWh when using your own mobile charger.

While the initial rental or purchase price of an electric vehicle remains higher than its fossil-fuel counterpart, the gap is narrowing rapidly. When looking at operational costs, the energy-per-kilometer cost is significantly lower for electric transport.

Heavy Truck: Electric operational energy costs drop to €1,244 compared to €2,514 for diesel. While total monthly costs (including rental) are higher (€10,244 EV vs. €8,014 Fossil), the carbon output drops from 3,399 kg of $CO_2$ (standard diesel) down to 0 kg if utilizing green electricity (or 797 kg using the standard Dutch grid mix).
14m³ Van: The total monthly cost difference is nearly negligible (€2,459 EV vs. €2,436 Fossil). Meanwhile, carbon emissions drop from 927 kg of $CO_2$ on diesel down to 0 kg on green energy (or 319 kg on the standard grid mix).
Step 5: Leverage Available Subsidies
To offset the higher initial investment of acquiring electric vehicles or building infrastructure, several key Dutch government incentives can be utilized:
AanZET 2026: An acquisition subsidy for zero-emission trucks (N2/N3) covering up to 29% of the purchase price for small businesses. The next application window runs from September 29 to October 16, 2026 via the RVO.
MIA / Vamil: Environmental tax investments offering deductions up to 45% of the total investment amount for electric vehicles or charging stations. Applications must be submitted within 3 months of signing the contract. This can be combined with AanZET.
KIA: A small-scale investment allowance applied via tax returns, which can be combined with MIA/Vamil.
